Ruling on eating some Animals not mentioned in the Book and Sunnah – Shaikh Abdul Muhsin al-’Abbad
Question: Is it allowed to eat the meat of elephants, giraffes, and Kangaroos? What is the principle in eating the meat of animals?
Answer: It is known in that the Shariah came with principles in this chapter. So every bird with talons and every animal with fangs is Haram. As that has come from the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam [Saheeh Muslim no. 1934]. Likewise whatever is related to filth and considered filthy. As for details in what is related to the types of animals, then this returns to the texts. However, the origin is permissibility until their comes an evidence for prohibition or it enters in the general rules: like animals which hunt with their fangs or talons from wild beasts, birds, or it is from what is considered filthy and the likes of this. This ruling applies for the remaining of the animals”.

When is it Allowed to Eat at Restaurants or Cafes That Sell Alcohol? – Shaikh al-Albani
Shaikh al-Albani rahimahullah said:
“…I believe that every Muslim, even in the lands of disbelief, is able to not sit at a table which alcohol is served. However, he is not able to not enter a restaurant or coffee shop [which serves them]. So then we say, Allah does not burden him with more than he can bear. So that which is necessary for the Muslim to observe always is that this [action] is evil and hated and he should hate it with the severest of hatred. This is from the angle of belief. Then from the angle of action, then he attempts to make differentiation even by last of affair. That is, it is possible to retreat to a place in the coffee shop or restaurant such that he does not sit with those who are drinking alcohol directly. However, with that, I imagine that there is space for a Muslim even in the lands of disbelief to lighten the affair. That is to look at the restaurant. Is the restaurant spacious such that there is space to retreat there, like in a corner far away from sharing a table with them? Or is the restaurant or coffee shop tight, crowded such that there is no differentiation from them in terms of what they are doing of haram. This is from the meaning of:
فاتقوا الله ما استطعتم
So keep your duty to Allah and fear Him as much as you can
[64:16]
I believe the affair is clear?
Likewise, we heard that sometimes some companies, like the airlines, do not display alcohol to the passengers…”

Translator’s Note:
There are some coffee shops that now sell alcohol and will do so in the future, like Starbucks [see here: http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/starbucks-to-add-beer-and-wine-to-canadian-menu-1.2944863]. So this fatwa of the Shaikh rahimahullah is important in relation to both a restaurant and a cafe.
The Ruling on the Television Show ‘Star Academy’, ‘Big Brother’, and Others- Shaikh Abdurahman Ibn Nasir al-Barrak
Question: There is a lot of speech nowadays about what is shown on some media outlets and satellite channels, specifically the show Star Academy on MBC, Fear factor on the Art channel, Hawaa sawaa on MBC, and Big Brother on MBC. The idea of these programs is to gather male and female youth in an art institute, as they call it, for the purpose of learning and presenting their complete daily lives for the duration of twenty-four hours on these satellite channels. In these programs there is free-mixing and affairs that run contrary to chastity and modesty, such as: seclusion with women, kissing, and hugging. Also what is established on these channels in terms of issuing video clips of male and female singers along with displaying obscene images of women in different forms in order to sell some products by way of arousing desires.
So what is the ruling on watching these programs and what resembles them? What is the ruling on spending time in watching these channels in the home or during breaks or other than that? What is the danger caused by these channels to the worldly life and hereafter for the one who spends time watching it? What is the ruling on propagating the likes of these programs and promoting them in the newspapers and other medias? Can you give a speech of guidance for the Muslim Ummah warning against the likes of these means and does the one who places the likes of these channels in his house called a Dayyuth?
Answer: “All praise is due to Allah. What calls for great wonder and surprise is the one who asks about the ruling of these programs and what is included in them of evil, watching them, and propagating them. It is not hidden from the one who has the least amount of wisdom and remnants of intellect, religion, and sound disposition the evil of these programs and the greatness of their harm because they make apparent evils. Whoever makes them permissible is one stubbornly opposing the Legislation and denying it. And by making it permissible, he therefore becomes a disbeliever. So like this I say, watching these programs that include what was mentioned from the types of evils and propagating them and showing them in the houses, places of relaxation, cafes, and other than that and having lines that connect the viewers to these channels on which the programs appear, all of that is unlawful. This is because it is spreading corruption in the Muslim societies and corrupting it, spreading fornication between the male and female youth, and calling them to fahisha. Everyone who spends on this means or earns from this wealth, then it is spending on unlawful and earning what is unlawful.
Allah the Exalted said:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَن تَشِيعَ الْفَاحِشَةُ فِي الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتُمْ لاَ تَعْلَمُونَ
Verily, those who like that (the crime of) illegal sexual intercourse should be propagated among those who believe, they will have a painful torment in this world and in the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you know not. [24:19]
Allah the Exalted said:
وَلاَ تَقْرَبُواْ الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ
come not near to Al-Fawahish (shameful sins, illegal sexual intercourse, etc.) whether committed openly or secretly [6:151]
And He says:
And come not near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a Fahishah [i.e. anything that transgresses its limits (a great sin)], and an evil way (that leads one to Hell unless Allah forgives him) [17:32]
And Allah says:
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like palms of hands or one eye or both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer dress like veil, gloves, head-cover, apron, etc.), and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms, etc.) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband’s fathers, their sons, their husband’s sons, their brothers or their brother’s sons, or their sister’s sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islam), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And all of you beg Allah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful [24:30-31]
And Allah says:
Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.[5:2]
And Allah says:
O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves unjustly except it be a trade amongst you, by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you. [4:29]
So like this, know that the founders of these channels, those who finance it, prepare these programs, those who establish it and spend on it, all of them are mischief-makers on the earth and offenders to the religion and the dignity of the Ummah and its honor. And all those who participate in these channels and programs have the sins similar to those who watch and are connected. Just as the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
من دعا إلى ضلالة فعليه مثل آثام من تبعه من غير أن ينقص من آثامهم شيئا
if anyone invites others to follow error, the sin, will be equivalent to that of the people who follow him (in sinfulness) without their sins being diminished in any respect”.
[Muslim]
So know that those who intend to gather the wealth by this way are presenting themselves to the punishment of Allah in the worldly life and the hereafter. And what they gather will be erased. So it is obligatory for everyone to repent to Allah before its too late as Allah the Exalted said:
وَتُوبُواْ إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعاً أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
And all of you beg Allah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful [24:31]
So it is obligatory for the Muslim rulers of the Ummah to prevent the evil from us and close its window. It is obligatory on the Muslim rulers to take these people by their hands and prevent them from what Allah prohibited upon them. For everyone is responsible for what is entrusted of them as the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
كلكم راع وكلكم مسؤول عن رعيته
All of you are guardians and are responsible for your wards.
[Reported by Bukhari and Muslim from the Hadith of Abdulllah Ibn Umar]
It is not hidden that creating means like this to watch in the house then to keep silent about detesting it and following it is a type of pleasure for obscenity. So let every Muslim fear Allah and warn of the punishment of Allah as Allah advised that in His statement:
وَاتَّقُواْ اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ آلْعِقَابِ
And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.[5:2]
We ask Allah to rectify the conditions of the Muslims and rectify the Muslim rulers and to deflect the plot of the enemies. Verily He the Exalted is over everything capable. And may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his Companions”.

The prohibition of shisha [Pamphlet]
Our flawed unstanding of success
Success
Only a few years ago, I had a flawed perception as to what the purpose of life was. It was merely something which came about with a unconscious connection to “success”. Now, success back then, to me; success was simply a word which I tied with being wealthy. I thought that success was to wake up to a beautiful view, in a beautiful home, with a beautiful career, with a beautiful bank account. How wrong was I? I was a teenager raised in a society where the concept of “success” was fed to us. We were taught, it was to go to school, get a education, get a good career, and then you work until you die.
After converting to Islam, a lot of my questions were answered, with one of the most important questions being: “What is my purpose?”. A pair of some well known verse in the Qur’an reads: “Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion, and He is Able to do all things. Who has created death and life, that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving (67:1-2). I soonly realized that we are all slaves in terms of what we inclined to chase in this life. Not to say there is anything bad about being blessed with wealth and living according to your means, but the flawed perception that success is limited to living good in this world. How about the needy old man in the middle of the village in India who is living with self-content because he is pleased with the decree of his Creator? How about all those who are free from chasing materialism with a primary focus of pleasing their Lord? Is this not the success which we should be more focused on? If we live a wealthy and ‘comfortable’ life and die while our Lord is displeased with us, then what kind of success in this? Can we buy our Lord’s pleasure? Can we buy the Paradise He has prepared for us?
Allah says in the Qur’an: “Verily, those who believe and do righteous good deeds, for them will be Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise). That is the great success. (85:11). As our Creator says, “that is the great success”. The greatest success is to die upon a condition where your Creator is pleased with you. How many of us have actions in accordance to this. Knowing that life is short and we could depart any second, any day, any week, what have we prepared for the real success?
Allah also says in the Qur’an: “Nay, you prefer the life of this world; Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting. Verily! This is in the former Scriptures, The Scriptures of Ibrahim (Abraham) and Musa (Moses). (87:16-19)
Life is more than just working until you die, and success isn’t merely living well in this world, rather it is to enter the gates of Paradise.
May Allah make us of those who He is pleased with and allow us to enter his Paradise!
Friendship
By Shaykh Bakr Aboo Zayd (rahimahullaah)
Just as hereditary disposition is hidden (1), “bad characteristics are [also] hidden;” (2) because character is transferable, and [first] impressions are major abductors of hearts, and people are like the flocks of birds, naturally disposed to imitating one another; so beware of associating with whosoever is to this liking; for it is indeed destruction, and “prevention is better than cure.”
Therefore, choose the best for companionship and friendship; someone who will help you in your quest, in drawing nearer to your Lord, and agrees with you in your noble objective and intention. Take [from me] the most precise gauge in categorizing friends: (3)
- A friend who befriends you [solely] for his welfare.
- A friend who befriends you [solely] for fun.
- A friend who befriends you for virtue.
As regards the first two [categories of friends], then their [relationship] with…

Cursing the time
Cursing the time
Shaikh Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen rahimahullah said: “cursing the time divides into three parts. The first: the intent is purely a report without intending misfortune. So this is allowed. For example to say: “we are tired due to the severe heat today or cold. Or what resembles that because actions are judged based on intention. An example of this good statement simply for reporting is the statement of Lut alayhi salam when he said:
هَذَا يَوْمٌ عَصِيب
This is a distressful day (11:77)
