The Sunnah Regarding Yawning

The Sunnah Regarding Yawning

Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Yawning is from Satan and if anyone of you yawns, he should check his yawning as much as possible, for if anyone of you (during the act of yawning) should say: ‘Ha’, Satan will laugh at him.”

[Saheeh Bukhari no. 3289]

What to do When Yawning?

Shaikh Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen rahimahullah said:

“If you want to suppress it, then bite your lower lip, not a strong bite that it cuts, but in order to join the lips together such that the mouth does not open. So what is important is to suppress it whether by this way or other than it. If you are not able to suppress it, then place you hand on your mouth. As for what some of the Scholars, may Allah have mercy upon them, mention to place the back of your hand, then there is no origin for it. Verily, you place your palm to cover your mouth…So if you feel like yawning, if you are able to suppress it or prevent it, this is the Sunnah and this is better. If he is not able to, then place your hand on your mouth”.

[Sharh Riyaadh as-Saliheen (1/1001)]

Hafidh Ibn Hajr rahimahullah said:

“And in meaning, [by] placing the hand on the mouth or the thawb on the mouth or what will obtain the purpose. And the hand was only specified if the yawn cannot be suppressed by other than it”.

[Fathul-Bari (10/612)]

Imam al-Munaawi rahimahullah said:

“That is: with the back of your left palm as was mentioned by a group [of Scholars] and seen it as more complete. The origin of the Sunnah is to place the right hand. It was said: he places the palm of the right hand on the mouth instead of the left hand”.

[Fayd ul-Qaadir (1/314)]

How is Yawning From Shaytan?

Hafidh Ibn Hajr rahimahullah said:

“Ibn Battal said: yawning was attributed to Shaytan with the meaning of attributing pleasure and want. That is: Shaytan loves to see a person yawn because his image changes [i.e. face] so he laughs at him. It does not mean that Shaytan causes yawning…”

[Fathul-Bari (10/612)]

Why does Shaytaan Laugh at You When You Yawn?

Shaikh Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen rahimahullah said:

“That is Shaytan knows that this indicates his laziness and sluggishness and Shaytan loves that a human being be lazy and sluggish. We seek refuge with Allah from it. And Shaytan dislikes a person being energetic, serious, always firm, strong, and with energy”.

[Sharh Riyaadh as-Saliheen (1/1001)]

Does Shaytaan Enter a Person In Reality?

Hafidh Ibn Hajr rahimahullah said:

“As for the narration in Muslim that Shaytaan enters is carried to mean that he enters in reality and even if he runs inside the blood stream, he does not have dominance over it as long as the person mentions Allah. As for the one who yawns, he is not remembering Allah in that situation, so Shaytan dominates over him by entering in him in reality. It is also carried to mean that the word enter is used to intend dominance over him this is because the purpose of entering something is to gain dominance over it”.

Protection of Knowledge – Sh. Bakr Abu Zayd (Rahimahullah)

Protection of Knowledge

If you attain status, then remember that the rope that helped you to reach it was seeking knowledge.
So by the grace of Allaah, and then due to your knowledge, you reached whatever status you have reached in this post, or fatwa, or judiciary post , and so on,so give knowledge
its due respect and fair share of implementation, and its due status.

Beware of the way of those who do not show reverence towards Allaah, those who base their foundation upon protecting their status, so their tongues become enwrapped from speaking the word of truth, and they are led to act accordingly by the love of their status.
Therefore adhere to preserving your value by preserving your piety, knowledge, and self-esteem, with wisdom and good diplomacy:

“Preserve Allaah and He will preserve you”, “Preserve Allaah at times of ease, He will preserve you at times of hardship”

If you are dismissed from the burden of responsibility – and this is your path even after a long period – then no harm is done, for it is a praiseworthy expulsion, and not one of blameworthiness and degradation .

It is an astonishing affair that those who have been prevented from a large proportion of prosperity do not have adherence, repentance, or do they return to Allaah except after retirement, and even though such people’s repentance is religiously valid, is like the faith of the old commoner, because his benefit is not passed on (to the people).

As for [his character during his] period of employment you will find him to be amongst the most evil and harmful of people, or too cold-hearted and dumb in speaking the truth.

I seek refuge in Allaah from such humiliation .

“Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.” – (English – Mohsin Khan)

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) summarized the extent of his noble manners by saying:

The Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) used to greet the children when he passed by them. Sometimes, a little girl would take him by the hand and he would allow her to lead him wherever she wanted. He (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) used to lick his fingers after eating. He (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) would be in the service of his family when at home. Never would he become angry because of something personal. He (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) used to repair his own sandals and mend his own torn clothes. He would milk his goat himself for his own family. He would feed his own camel. He used to eat with his servants, sit in the company of the poor people, and personally take care of the needs of widows and orphans. He would be the one to initiate the greeting when meeting people. He would respond to the humblest of invitations. He (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) lived a very modest lifestyle, a man of soft manners, naturally kind, easy to get along with, having a pleasant smile on his face, gracefully humble, extremely generous but not wasteful, soft-hearted and gentle in his dealing with each and every Muslim, lowering his wings of humility to the believers, bearing their companionship in such a gentle way.

Why are many Youth attracted to extremism and fall prey to it?

Why are many Youth attracted to extremism and fall prey to it?

The Prophet predicted that the extremists that will emerge at the end of times will be young in age and weak in intellect.

Narrated `Ali: I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, “In the last days (of the world) there will appear young people with foolish thoughts and ideas. They will give good talks, but they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out of its game..”

[Reported by al-Bukhari no. 5057]

Imam al-’Adheemabaadi (may Allah have mercy upon him) said:

“young people with foolish thoughts and ideas young in age and weak in intellect. It says in an-Nihaayah [the famous dictionary written by Ibn al-Athir]: (حداثة السن) is a euphemism for youth” [‘Awn al-Ma’bood]

So we learn that typically the extremists are of this description. Their young age means they are inexperienced and not knowledgable. Thus, they are more prone to extreme thinking and actions.

Shaikh Abdul-Muhsin al-’Abbad (may Allah preserve  him) said:

“young in age, that is, they are youth. They are described as being young in age meaning they did not reach the age until they experience the affairs [of the world and religion] like those who are older experience it and understand it. Verily, some of the youth [hope] to acquire things fast or are daring/bold towards whose consequences are not praiseworthy. This is because they did not obtain firmness in opinion and firmness upon the truth” [Sharh Sunan Abu Dawood no. 542]

Islam is against extremism

Islam is Against Extremism

What is Extremism?

Linguistic meaning:

Ibn Mandhoor said: “it  means exceeding the bounds. From it is the term the prices have become expensive (غلا ) and the pot has boiled (غلا )”

[Lisan ul-Arab (15/134)]

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: “and extremism (الغلو) is exceeding the bounds by increasing something in its praise or blame above what it deserves and the likes of that”

[Iqtidaa as-Siraatul-Mustaqeem li Mukhaalifah Ashaabul Jaheem (1/328)]

The Legislated Meaning:

“Exceeding the legislated boundary”. The opposite of extremism is falling short           (التقصير) and both are blameworthy. The best of affairs is the middle path.

Muttarif ibn Abdillah said rahimahullah said:

الْحَسَنَةُ بَيْنَ سَيِّئَتَيْنِ

“Good is between two evils [i.e. between extremism and falling-short]”

It was said: extremism is exceeding the boundary by excessive or falling short

Benefit regarding the change of weather

Shaikh Bakr Abu Zaid rahimahullah said:

“Hot day (يوم حار) [See: Daa wa Dawaa pg. 233 and Musnad Imam Ahmad (6/410)]

Ibn ul-Qayyim rahimahullah said in his research about the mistakes of the tongue in Dawaa wa Dawaa:

وقد كان السلف يحاسب أحدهم نفسه في قوله : يوم حار ، ويوم بارد

“The Salaf used to take one another to account for their saying: a hot day and a cold day”

It has become from the norm of the people to follow the changes in the weather and its temperature: heat and cold. How many is their terminology in that and their following of it: complaining and paining because of the intense heat and the intense cold. A person desires for winter in the summer and when the winter comes he detests it. This is because he is not pleased in any condition. Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.

It is appropriate for a Muslim to avoid following the likes of this and taking it as a discussion in the sittings. In the Musnad of Imam Ahmad from Khawlah radiallahu anha that the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam said:

ابن آدم إن أصابه البرد قال : حس ، وإن أصابه الحر قال : حس

“The son of Adam, if cold afflicts him he says Hass [a statement said when one is in pain like ouch] and if heat afflicts him he says: Hass [a statement said when one is in pain like ouch]

[Silsilatus-Saheeha no. 1578]

[Taken from Mu’jim al-Manaahi al-Lafdhiyyah (1/128)]

Subhanallah! This is our custom today as the Shaikh described. We should take heed of the Shaikh’s advice and not indulge in the discussion of the weather or complain about it, especially since we have a lot changes in weather in Canada. May Allah reward Shaikh Bakr for his beneficial work rahimahullah.

The purpose of seeking knowledge

The purpose of seeking knowledge

Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله said:

❝The seeker of Knowledge should seek knowledge to benefit himself, and to get rid of his ignorance, and to come closer to His Lord, and to please Him – upon sure knowledge; and to benefit the people, taking them from darkness to light, deciding their problems, making terms of peace among them, teaching the ignorant among them, guiding those who are astray, enjoining the good and forbidding the evil, and so on. ❞

[Majmoo` Fataawa Ibn Baaz (7/204)]

A person must prepare to meet Allaah…

Ash-Shaykh ibn Uthaymeen,

May Allaah have mercy on him, said,
“A person must prepare to meet Allaah عزوجل and know how he will meet Allaah— will he do so in a condition that pleases Him عزوجل or the opposite? So examine yourself and know what state you are in.”

Ways to strengthen iman – Permanaent Committee

Q 2: What are the ways to strengthen one’s Iman (faith/belief) in the face of the many temptations that confront us today (on televisions, in streets, from the western societies)?

A: There are many ways to strengthen Iman, among them: observing acts of obedience and abstaining from prohibitions, keeping company with pious people, frequently reciting the Noble Qur’an and contemplating its meanings, studying the Sunnah (acts, sayings or approvals of the Prophet), constant engaging in Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah), making Du`a’ (supplication), and being totally and poorly dependant on Allah.

May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.

Reckoning on the Day of Resurrection – Permanent Committee

Reckoning on the Day of Resurrection

Q 6: What will the reckoning on the Day of Resurrection be like? Will every Ummah (nation) be called to account using its own language, or what? What is the wisdom behind Resurrection, though it is well known that Allah is All-knowing of the affairs of His Creation?

A: Reckoning on the Day of Resurrection is for every person to know their good and bad deeds in worldly life by reading their own record of deeds, which they will receive either with the right or left hand, and acknowledge that there is nothing written in it that they have not done. Anyone who denies what is in the record of their deeds, their skin and organs will testify to what they have done. Allah (Exalted be He) says: On the Day when their tongues, their hands, and their legs (or feet) will bear witness against them as to what they used to do. And: This Day, We shall seal up their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their legs will bear witness to what they used to earn. (It is said that one’s left thigh will be the first to bear the witness). [Tafsir At-Tabarî,] And: And (remember) the Day that the enemies of Allâh will be gathered to the Fire, then they will be driven [(to the Fire), former ones being withheld till their later ones will join them]. Till, when they reach it (Hell-fire), their hearing (ears) and their eyes, and their skins will testify against them as to what they used to do. And they will say to their skins, “Why do you testify against us?” They will say: “Allâh has caused us to speak as He causes all things to speak: and He created you the first time, and to Him you are made to return.” The wisdom behind the reckoning is:Showing the perfection of Allah’s Justice and confronting His servants with the irrefutable evidence as to what they did in this world.

May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions.
