Today’s Ramadan benefit is about hastening to break the fast and not waiting for the Muadhin. You find many people today delaying the iftar even after the time has entered according to the timetable and instead wait for the Muadhin. The Muadhin himself sometimes delays the time for the adhan due to breaking the fast himself or with the argument of making sure that the time entered. In either case, the Salaf used to hasten to break the fast and they did not wait for the Muadhin. If the time entered, the Sunnah is to break the fast.
The Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam said:
عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ “ لاَ يَزَالُ النَّاسُ بِخَيْرٍ مَا عَجَّلُوا الْفِطْرَ
“The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast.”
[Saheeh al-Bukhari no. 1957]
The Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam used to hasten to break the fast without waiting for the Muadhin:
كان إذا كان صائما أمر رجلا فأوفى على نشز ، فإذا قال : قد غابت الشمس أفطر
“If he was fasting sallahu alayhi wa salam, he would order a man to ascend a high place. If he [the mann] said: the sun has set, he sallahu alayhi wa salam used to break his fast”
Shaikh al-Albani rahimahullah wrote commenting on the above Hadith:
“I say: in this Hadith is his concern sallahu alayhi wa salam to hasten to break the fast after the he sallahu alayhi wa salam was sure the sun set. So he ordered the one who ascended a high place to inform him of the setting of the sun so he sallahu alayhi wa salam could break his fast. And that did not occur from him except to affirm his statement sallahu alayhi wa salam: “The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast.” It is investigated in al-Irwaa (917). It is truly unfortunate that we see the people today opposing the Sunnah. For verily many of them see the sun set with their eyes and along with that do not break their fast until they hear the adhan of the land…” [Then the Shaikh mentioned two reasons for this ignorance]
The Companions radiallahu anhumma used to hasten to break their fast and they too did not wait for the Muadhin
حدثنا وهب بن بقية ، أخبرنا خالد ، عن حميد ، عن أنس ، أنه لم يكن ينتظر المؤذن في الإفطار وكان يعجل الفطر
“Anas ibn Malik radiallahu anhu did not wait for the Muadhin for Iftar. He used to hasten to break the fast”
[Reported by al-Firyaabi in as-Siyaam no. 51 and something similar was reported by at-Tabarani in Mu’jam al-Kabir no. 677. The Muhaqiq of as-Siyam by al-Firyaabi, Abdul Wakeel an-Nadwi, said: It’s chain is strong (pg. 58). And it is as he said ]
Some of the Companions radiallahu anahum used to hasten to break their fast so much that they would hide from the people lest they see them!
حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن مجاهد قال : إني كنت لآتي ابن عمر بفطره فأغطيه استحياء من الناس أن يروه
Mujahid said: “I used to bring Ibn Umar radiallahu anhumma his iftar and he used to hide it out of shyness that the people would see him”
[Reported by Ibn Abi Shaybah in al-Musannaf and its chain is Saheeh]
So let us practice the Sunnah of the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam and break the fast as soon as the time enters and let us not delay it waiting for the Muadhin.

Shaikh Abdullah Ibn Ahmad al-Iryaani hafidhuhallah said:
“And in the end, we advise with having Taqwa of Allah, the Exalted, seriousness and striving in the obedience of Allah, worship, obtaining understanding of the religion, holding fast to reading, and reciting the Noble Qur’an.
Beware of four matters:
First: Beware of heedlessness, for the month of Ramadan is not a month of amusement, games, staying up at night and following Television series, and competitions. Rather it is a month of obedience and hastening to the pleasure of the Lord of the creation.
Second: Beware of being preoccupied with a large diversity and variety of food from striving in standing for prayer and increasing in the recitation of the Quran. For Ramadan is not a month to make ‘Itikaaf in the kitchen, busying with travelling, and wedding banquets. Rather, it is a month for the Muslim male and female to reach the level of one fasting and praying.
Third: Beware of being negligent at the end of Ramadan from continuing to recite the Quran, striving in supplication, and silent supplication to Allah. For verily actions depend on the end. For many people, unfortunately, are preoccupied from Layltul-Qadr and its blessing with Eid clothing, going from market to market, and exhibition to exhibition. The guidance of the Prophet is doing ‘Itikaaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan and seeking Layltul Qadr in it.
Fourth: Beware of procrastination. For how many people are in heedlessness, so when month of Ramadan ends they feel remorse and loss. Then he makes contracts, promises, and covenants that if Allah allows him to reach the next Ramadan that he will strive in Ramadan and make time for Ramadan from the beginning. When that promised Ramadan comes to him, he is in that same heedlessness and negligence. Like this, in Allah aid is sought, he is consistent in procrastination every year.
So you Oh Abdullah, and you Amatullah, have made many promises that you have broken, many contracts you have nullified, is it not now that you should be truthful with Allah? Is it not now that you should fulfill your covenant with Allah? Then this is Ramadan that you have reached so there is nothing upon you except to be truthful to Allah and seek His assistance in righteous actions”.

Why is it called Ramadan?
O seeker of evil, stop! Hold back From Your Disobedience and Return to Allah Because This is the Time of the Acceptance of Repentance
Question: Some Youth break their fast solely on the setting of the disk of the sun and they do not wait to hear the Adhaan. They find in the masjid debate and dispute with the elders [due to this issue]. So what is your advice?
Answer: “This occurs in the Haram, otherwise where else. As for those who break their fast solely on the setting of the sun, then this one achieved the Sunnah. The one who delays the iftar falls into the opposition of the Sunnah. However, if this leads to corruption, trial, differing and problems, then hold back, Oh fasting ones, and enlighten the people and spread the Sunnah between them.
The Ahaadith are clear. The Messenger sallahu alayhi w salam was on a journey. He said to his servant: Dismount and mix water with saweeq (barely) for us. So the servant said: It is still daytime. So the Messenger sallahu alayhi wa salam said: Dismount and mix it for us. So the servant said: It is still daytime. So the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam said: Mix it for us. So he dismounted and mixed the water with the saweeq.
[Reported by Al-Bukhari no. 1956]
The point is that this nation will continue to be upon good as long as they hasten the iftar and delay the suhoor. So it is legislated for this nation and its from its distinguishing characteristics and the difference between it and the Jews and Christians. They (the Muslims) hasten the iftar and delay the suhoor. So this is the Sunnah and it is necessary for it to be spread”.

Question: I heard from some of the brothers that Communal Iftar is an innovation, in the month of Ramadan or for voluntary fasts, is this correct?
Answer: There is no harm in communal Iftars in Ramadan or outside of it as long as he does not believe this gathering is an act of worship due Allah’s statement:
لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ تَأْكُلُوا جَمِيعًا أَوْ أَشْتَاتًا
No sin on you whether you eat together or apart.
However, if he fears by the communal iftar, showing off due to distinguishing the fasting people for other than them, then it is disliked for them that.

Question: There is a lot of speech nowadays about what is shown on some media outlets and satellite channels, specifically the show Star Academy on MBC, Fear factor on the Art channel, Hawaa sawaa on MBC, and Big Brother on MBC. The idea of these programs is to gather male and female youth in an art institute, as they call it, for the purpose of learning and presenting their complete daily lives for the duration of twenty-four hours on these satellite channels. In these programs there is free-mixing and affairs that run contrary to chastity and modesty, such as: seclusion with women, kissing, and hugging. Also what is established on these channels in terms of issuing video clips of male and female singers along with displaying obscene images of women in different forms in order to sell some products by way of arousing desires.
So what is the ruling on watching these programs and what resembles them? What is the ruling on spending time in watching these channels in the home or during breaks or other than that? What is the danger caused by these channels to the worldly life and hereafter for the one who spends time watching it? What is the ruling on propagating the likes of these programs and promoting them in the newspapers and other medias? Can you give a speech of guidance for the Muslim Ummah warning against the likes of these means and does the one who places the likes of these channels in his house called a Dayyuth?
Answer: “All praise is due to Allah. What calls for great wonder and surprise is the one who asks about the ruling of these programs and what is included in them of evil, watching them, and propagating them. It is not hidden from the one who has the least amount of wisdom and remnants of intellect, religion, and sound disposition the evil of these programs and the greatness of their harm because they make apparent evils. Whoever makes them permissible is one stubbornly opposing the Legislation and denying it. And by making it permissible, he therefore becomes a disbeliever. So like this I say, watching these programs that include what was mentioned from the types of evils and propagating them and showing them in the houses, places of relaxation, cafes, and other than that and having lines that connect the viewers to these channels on which the programs appear, all of that is unlawful. This is because it is spreading corruption in the Muslim societies and corrupting it, spreading fornication between the male and female youth, and calling them to fahisha. Everyone who spends on this means or earns from this wealth, then it is spending on unlawful and earning what is unlawful.
Allah the Exalted said:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَن تَشِيعَ الْفَاحِشَةُ فِي الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتُمْ لاَ تَعْلَمُونَ
Verily, those who like that (the crime of) illegal sexual intercourse should be propagated among those who believe, they will have a painful torment in this world and in the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you know not. [24:19]
Allah the Exalted said:
وَلاَ تَقْرَبُواْ الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ
come not near to Al-Fawahish (shameful sins, illegal sexual intercourse, etc.) whether committed openly or secretly [6:151]
And He says:
وَلاَ تَقْرَبُواْ الزِّنَى إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَآءَ سَبِيلاً
And come not near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a Fahishah [i.e. anything that transgresses its limits (a great sin)], and an evil way (that leads one to Hell unless Allah forgives him) [17:32]
And Allah says:
قُلْ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّواْ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُواْ فُرُوجَهُمْ ذلِكَ أَزْكَى لَهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ. وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَاء بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَائِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَاء بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي أَخَوَاتِهِنَّ أَوْ نِسَائِهِنَّ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُنَّ أَوِ التَّابِعِينَ غَيْرِ أُوْلِي الْإِرْبَةِ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ أَوِ الطِّفْلِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يَظْهَرُوا عَلَى عَوْرَاتِ النِّسَاء وَلَا يَضْرِبْنَ بِأَرْجُلِهِنَّ لِيُعْلَمَ مَا يُخْفِينَ مِن زِينَتِهِنَّ وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعاً أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like palms of hands or one eye or both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer dress like veil, gloves, head-cover, apron, etc.), and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms, etc.) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband’s fathers, their sons, their husband’s sons, their brothers or their brother’s sons, or their sister’s sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islam), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And all of you beg Allah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful [24:30-31]
And Allah says:
وَتَعَاوَنُواْ عَلَى الْبرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَلاَ تَعَاوَنُواْ عَلَى الإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ وَاتَّقُواْ اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ آلْعِقَابِ
Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.[5:2]
And Allah says:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لاَ تَأْكُلُواْ أَمْوَالَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ بِالْبَاطِلِ إِلاَّ أَن تَكُونَ تِجَارَةً عَن تَرَاضٍ مِّنكُمْ وَلاَ تَقْتُلُواْ أَنفُسَكُمْ إِنَّ اللّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيماً
O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves unjustly except it be a trade amongst you, by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you. [4:29]
So like this, know that the founders of these channels, those who finance it, prepare these programs, those who establish it and spend on it, all of them are mischief-makers on the earth and offenders to the religion and the dignity of the Ummah and its honor. And all those who participate in these channels and programs have the sins similar to those who watch and are connected. Just as the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
من دعا إلى ضلالة فعليه مثل آثام من تبعه من غير أن ينقص من آثامهم شيئا
if anyone invites others to follow error, the sin, will be equivalent to that of the people who follow him (in sinfulness) without their sins being diminished in any respect”.
So know that those who intend to gather the wealth by this way are presenting themselves to the punishment of Allah in the worldly life and the hereafter. And what they gather will be erased. So it is obligatory for everyone to repent to Allah before its too late as Allah the Exalted said:
وَتُوبُواْ إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعاً أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
And all of you beg Allah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful [24:31]
So it is obligatory for the Muslim rulers of the Ummah to prevent the evil from us and close its window. It is obligatory on the Muslim rulers to take these people by their hands and prevent them from what Allah prohibited upon them. For everyone is responsible for what is entrusted of them as the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
كلكم راع وكلكم مسؤول عن رعيته
All of you are guardians and are responsible for your wards.
[Reported by Bukhari and Muslim from the Hadith of Abdulllah Ibn Umar]
It is not hidden that creating means like this to watch in the house then to keep silent about detesting it and following it is a type of pleasure for obscenity. So let every Muslim fear Allah and warn of the punishment of Allah as Allah advised that in His statement:
وَاتَّقُواْ اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ آلْعِقَابِ
And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.[5:2]
We ask Allah to rectify the conditions of the Muslims and rectify the Muslim rulers and to deflect the plot of the enemies. Verily He the Exalted is over everything capable. And may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his Companions”.

The Importance of Having Sincerity when Fasting
Al-Imaam Muqbil bin Haadi Al-Waadi’ee, may Allah have mercy upon him, says in his great book, Al-Jaami’ As-Saheeh Vol.2, Pge. 482, Hadeeth No. 1479
“Having Sincerity When Fasting
Upon the authority of Abu Hurayrah, May Allah be pleased with him that he said: the Messenger of Allah (may be peace upon him) said:
“It could be that the fortune of the one who is fasting is just hunger and thirst and it could be that the fortune of the one who is standing in prayer is just sleeplessness.”
This hadeeth is Hasan”
The hadeeth is reported by Al-Imaam Ahmad (v.2, pg 373) and also translated by meaning and without the chain of narration.
Fasting of Ashurah
Imaam nawawee said (may Allah have mercy on him)
in the explanation of Saheeh Muslim in the chapter: Fasting on the day of Al-‘Ashurah” the consensus of the scholars is upon that the fast of ashurah is Sunnah”
Was the fasting of Ashurah obligatory or was it just Sunnah always?
There are two opinions in this
That it was mustahab (Encouraged) only and this is the opinion of the Jamhoor (Majority of the scholars).
They use as a proof the narration of Mua’awiyah bin Abee Sufiyaan in the Saheeheen (Bukhaari & Muslim) he said ” I heard the Messenger of Allah saying ” Verily this the day of Al-‘Ashurah and Allah has not written upon you it’s fast( i.e. made it waajib) so whoso ever will fast and whoso ever wills leave it” :Bukhaari 2003 Muslim 1129
That it was waajib (obligatory) then it was abrogated and it became mustahab (Encouraged) when fasting ramadaan was made obligatory. this is the opinion of Imaam Ahmed, Hannifa, an opinion with Shafiee and it is it is deemed to be the correct opinion by a group of Muhagigeen (checkers of books) like Ibn Hazam, As-Shookanie and before them Hafith Ibn Hajar and other than them.
They use as proof for this as which follows:
1) The narration of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said ” Quraish use to fast ashurah in the days of Jahiliyyah (Ignorance) and the Messenger use to fast it, when he migrated to Madeenah he fasted it and he commanded it to be fast, but when the month of ramadaan was made obligatory he said ” he who wills can fast and he who wills can leave it” Bukhaari 1893 and Muslim 1125
2) The narration of Abee mosa (may Allah be pleased with him) in the Saheeheen he said ” verily the prophet said ” Fast it you” (i.e. the companions) may Allah be pleased with them all
3) The narration of Salam bin Akwa’a and Al-Rabbe Bint Mua’ad (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the Saheeheen that the prophet of Allah said ” Whoever ate let him complete what is left of his day (i.e. carry on eating) and whoever did not eat let him complete his fast”
As for the Hadeeth of Mua’awiyah bin Abee Sufiyaan (may Allah be pleased with him) ” and Allah has not written it’s fast upon you” It is said by Ibn Qudaamah (may Allah have mercy on him) ” It is held upon(the Hadeeth of Mua’awiyah bin Abee Sufiyaan) the meaning that it is not obligatory upon you now, what helps this is that Mua’awiyah was among the latter Muslim (i.e. to submit to Islaam)
The sheikh holds that the second opinion in the correct one then he says “Allah know best”
