Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما was asked: How did you gain your knowledge?

بم أدركت العلم ؟ قال : أدركت العلم بلسان سؤول ،وقلب عقول ، وبدن غير ملول

Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما was asked:

How did you gain your knowledge?

He said: I gained it with an inquisitive tongue (i.e. a tongue that asks questions) , an understanding heart, and a body that doesn’t get tired.

Reported by al-Imam Ahmad in his book the virtues of the Sahaabahs (970/2).

Imam Ash Shafiee in Ar Risaalah encouraged learning the Arabic language

Ash Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Ali Ibn Hizaam said:

Imam Ash Shafiee in Ar Risaalah encouraged learning the Arabic language and mentioned some chapters in regards to that due to the importance of that as has preceded.

Due to that a person shouldn’t turn away from learning Nahwu (Arabic grammar) and he shouldn’t despair. The beginning of it becomes hard upon some people, then he becomes impatient with this field, and its not befitting that he become impatient rather upon him is that he has patience, and reads it time after time until Allah opens it upon him, perhaps it may become hard upon him in the beginning only, if he continues it will be made easy upon him by the permission of Allah, he shouldn’t make it much upon himself by studying more then a book, whilst the information repeats in every book.

Raising children upon knowledge.

Musa Millington's avatarMusa Millington

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah,

Now I am not the greatest of parents and I do not claim to be such. However, as a parent I do have some suggestions regarding this issue of raising children Islamically in a western country where the pressures of life and the fitan (trials) far surpass that of any majority Muslim country (unless it is war torn.) What I am saying essentially is that if one can go to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Gambia, Somaliland or any other Muslim country (not ISIS as they are Khawarij) then do so as the chances of having a proper Islamic upbringing in these countries are far greater than in Western societies. If anyone can’t afford to do so then these are some suggestions:

Select a wife/ husband who loves knowledge and seeks it. Many times brothers and sisters select partners who do not match this criteria on the premise that…

The Matoon a Student of Knowledge Memorizes after Memorizing the Quran – Shaikh Ibn ul-Uthaymeen

Question: If a student of knowledge finishes memorizing the Quran, does he start with Saheehayn or does he start with the Matoon?

Shaikh: What Matoon?

Questioner: Like Usool ath-Thalatha and Umdat ul-Ahkam and other than it

Shaikh: “I see that he focuses on the books of Sunnah from the books written on this [subject]. As for the Saheehayn, then Yes, no doubt that they are important. However, as you know there are Ahaadith in Saheehayn that people do not need much, like [Ahaadith on] transactions and agriculture and other than it. So let him memorize after that, for example, Bulugh al-Maram or Umdatul Ahkam. Then after this, let him come to Tawheed and Aqeedah and the Matoon of Fiqh”.

How to Combine Between Memorizing the Quran, Seeking Knowledge, and Da’wah – Shaikh Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen

Question: How is it possible to combine between memorizing the Book of Allah, seeking knowledge, and da’wah?

Answer: “Each of these is from the other. They do not contradict. However, as long as a person is young, then memorization is more deserving. This is because the young one is quick in memorizing and [his] forgetfulness is little. He does not have large responsibilities. Then, every time a person grows [in age] he expands in the issues of knowledge and in da’wah to Allah, the Exalted”.
